Abstract
The scope of the modern periodontal practice extends beyond treatment of periodontitis and gingival recessions and includes a wide range of procedures ranging from conscious sedation, dental implant therapy, to management of peri-implantitis, impacted teeth exposures, lip-repositioning surgeries, and esthetic makeovers. Many of these procedures require an interdisciplinary approach in order to provide comprehensive care. Therefore, referrals between general dentists and periodontists and between periodontists and clinicians in other fields, including medicine, are inevitable for the day-to-day clinical practice. This chapter provides an overview of referral process, identifies the inadequacies in the referral patterns, and offers practitioners a guideline for when, what, and how to refer a patient to a periodontal practice.
