Abstract
Brief versions of experimental analysis procedures have proven to be very useful for evaluating behavior in pediatric outpatient clinics. The first generation of these procedures evaluated antecedent-problem behavior and problem behavior-consequence relations, and often identified the environmental conditions that evoked and/or maintained problem behavior within multielement designs. More recent versions of the procedures have evaluated how distinct variables interact to evoke or maintain problem behavior, the conditions under which other target behaviors, such as academic behaviors, can be improved, and the preferences of children for various components of treatments. In this chapter, we describe how one pediatrics clinic, the Behavioral Pediatrics Clinic at the University of Iowa, has implemented brief experimental analyses since the late 1980s. We provide case examples of the procedures and show how the evaluations can be extended to evaluate variables that may interact to evoke or maintain target behavior.
