Abstract
Space and time are crucial dimensions in understanding the development of communities. The chapters in this volume demonstrate that multiscalar spatiotemporal approaches provide useful insights into the histories and contexts of early villages and village societies. In this chapter, our spatial scales include multiple regions in the North American Midcontinent as well as a sitespecific case study. Our temporal scale is the approximately 700-year period between 100 BCE and 600 CE, generally subdivided into Hopewell horizon and post-Hopewell eras. We summarize and contextualize the record of settlement forms within these spatial and temporal dimensions, and offer a synthetic treatment of
