Abstract
I was the first to describe the clinical entity of posterior ischemic optic neuropathy (PION) in 1981 [1], based on my studies on the blood supply of the optic nerve (see Chap. 3) and clinical studies of ischemic optic neuropathies. It is very distinct from anterior ischemic optic neuropathy pathogenetically and clinically (see Chaps. 14 and 16). Since then, an extensive literature has accumulated on PION. More recently, I [2] published a detailed account of its clinical features, pathogenesis, and management, based on a detailed study of 53 consecutive eyes with PION seen in my clinic.
