Abstract
Walt Whitman’s letters have generally been viewed as something of a disappointment – useful in fleshing out his biography during the early 1860s and especially during the final two decades of his life but, except for his descriptions of Civil War hospitals and wounded soldiers, oddly flat and of little use in understanding his poetry and other writings or in clarifying his relationship to other writers, and of very limited use in tracing the development of his aesthetics or his political ideas.
