Abstract
The mechanisms by which writing or talking about stressful or traumatic events influence immunity and health have attracted a great deal of interest. Key questions involve the role of cognitive and emotional processing, whether insight and resolution are necessary, and whether the mere act of submitting an upsetting event to a linguistic context is the critical element in facilitating integration and assimilation. An additional challenge involves understanding the interactions of psychological processes and physiological change. The authors explore these questions by drawing from the literature on written and verbal disclosure, and then examine psychological processing particularly as it relates to immune outcomes.
