Abstract
Previous work by our group and others have shown that manipulations in intrathoracic pressure and lung inflation have the effect of altering cardiac size and function1,2. The mechanisms by which these changes affect the circulatory system are not clearly understood. Possibilities include alterations in venous return3, stroke volume4,5, ventricular preload and afterload6, pulmonary vascular resistance7, and other mechanisms. Previous work by Cournand et al. have shown that mechanical ventilation (i.e. positive pressure) has deleterious effects on cardiac performance.8
