Abstract
The first three sections of this book (Teaching Methods and Approaches; Culture, Pragmatics, and Intercultural Communicative Competence; and Assessment and Program Evaluation) focused on how to plan for, instruct, and assess the teaching and learning of language and cultures for all world languages (WLs), including both commonly and less commonly taught languages, as well as for the teaching of English as a second or foreign language. Also addressed are the various developmental levels of students (elementary, secondary, and tertiary) and diverse program models-such as traditional WL classrooms, instruction for heritage learners, dual/bilingual education, and study abroad (SA) programs. The fourth section, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the World Language Classroom, situated WL instruction in the current realities of working with students from diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, races, gender identities, sexual orientation, and/or those with varied needs with respect to neurodiversity provides support and direction so that all students can thrive in language classrooms at every level both in the United States and abroad. The fifth section, Technology Integration and Online Language Teaching and Learning, addressed the new realities of teaching in online and/or hybrid settings as well as how to harness new and emerging technologies in the WL classroom. The sixth and final section, Key Issues in World Language Instruction, examined a number of important topics for the field including the Seal of Biliteracy (SoBL), continuous professional development, the language teacher shortage, barriers to certification, language revitalization, and why WL education programs are essential for the formation of all K-16 students.
