Abstract
The conclusion argues that the legacy of the Nasser years is ambivalent and contradictory. On the one hand, the Free Officers promised equality and social justice while, on the other, the political system they established denied realization these promises. Nonetheless, the ideas themselves influenced citizens’ expectations of the state in the post-1970 period.
