Abstract
This chapter examines work dedicated to the construction and diffusion of new status characteristics. Beginning with Ridgway’s status construction theory and Berger and Fisek’s spread of status value theory, the chapter delves into two important mechanisms leading to the formation of a new status characteristic: control over differential resources and resulting interactional hierarchies of assertiveness for the former and associations with extant status characteristics for the latter. Thye’s status value theory of power adds to this by showing a way for objects to become imbued with status thereby transforming into valued social rewards. These rewards then affect relative power and profit differences in negotiations. Finally, work by Harkness demonstrates how rewards can create new status characteristics in an immediate setting. The chapter ends by pointing to potential new avenues of research as scholars continue moving this area forward.
