Abstract
This chapter deals with ideas for collaboration with mental health agencies and other entities and school counselors’ professional development. School counselors working in rural settings may have a qualitatively different experience than their urban or suburban counterparts. In 1997 Patrick Morrissette conducted a literature review of research pertaining to the experience of rural school counselors and later, in 2001, followed this with a qualitative study on the same topic. School counselors may experience a lack of support systems including fewer friendships, difficulties in connecting with peers and families, and feelings of loneliness. Restricted professional development and peer group. School counselors may be the only helping professionals for miles, resulting in a lack of colleagues with which to brainstorm solutions and a lack of different perspectives on problems. The remoteness of some rural schools limits resources, such as museums and libraries, that gifted students can access to enrich their learning experience.
