Abstract
The Invent Iowa process exemplifies the variety of options that have emerged since the end of the 20th century and are now available online for educators, parents, or students who search for “invention curriculum.” Adult inventors report generally liking school but not excelling in academics, and in school-based inventiveness programs, young inventors are often those who are taking their toys apart rather than playing with them and tinkering with anything else they can disassemble. Invention programs explain the patent process, often include lessons exploring entrepreneurship, and encourage students to find a problem to solve in the world around them. Inventors, often committed to making things better, simpler, and generally wanting to contribute to society, have urged educators to teach more about innovation. Programs such as Invent Iowa have provided curriculum and programming support, and they often culminate in invention conventions, allowing students to showcase their work and to explain their thinking, their process, and their product to an authentic audience.
