Abstract
This paper presents translation as an asset-based pedagogy that draws on students’ full linguistic repertoires during second language learning. Translation is a mediational tool that allows students to do things with language across different modes of communication and the multiple languages and language varieties available in the classroom. The first section of the paper articulates the tenets of translation as an asset-based pedagogy in the diverse multilingual classroom, with a focus on the world language (WL) classroom. The second part describes how this pedagogy was introduced in a series of professional development (PD) workshops with elementary, secondary, and post-secondary WL teachers in the United States. The significance of this chapter lies in the transformative potential of translation in diverse world classrooms in the United States and internationally.
