Abstract

Developmental psychopathology is a scientific framework which draws upon various fields of study to examine maladaptive behavioral and mental/emotional problems. Three key principles of the developmental psychopathology framework are (1) the study of causation; (2) the heterogeneity of cause, course, and outcome; and (3) the emphasis on the trajectories and continuity between typical and atypical development. These principles are examined and expanded upon within this article. Additionally, antisocial behavior is examined as an exemplar for how the developmental psychopathology perspective is advancing knowledge regarding the etiology and treatment of psychological problems.
