Abstract

Premalignant diseases of the liver include chronic hepatitis B, chronic hepatitis C, nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), cirrhosis from any cause, hepatic adenomas, and primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC). The primary malignant diseases of the liver are hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and cholangiocarcinoma (CCA). HCC occurs most often in cirrhotic patients, especially those with chronic hepatitis B or C. HCC also develops in noncirrhotic patients with hepatitis B or C, NASH, and hepatic adenomas. PSC patients are at risk of CCA. Metastatic liver tumors are the most common malignant hepatic neoplasms in Western countries. Less common hepatic neoplasms include biliary cystadenocarcinoma and fibrolamellar carcinoma. Imaging studies can usually distinguish malignant hepatic lesions from nonmalignant lesions, making biopsy rarely necessary.
