Abstract

The past decade has experienced an unprecedented advance in our understanding of psychiatric disorders. This has led to renewed optimism and excitement in psychiatry in general and in schizophrenia research in particular. The optimism stems primarily from developments in the basic neurosciences and computer technology as well as from refinements that have been made in established psychiatric research areas such as epidemiology and phenomenology.
