Abstract
One of the major roles of the lungs is to facilitate gas exchange from the circulatory system and the external environment. Gas exchange occurs in the lungs between alveolar air and blood of the pulmonary capillaries. A test of the diffusing capacity of the lungs for carbon monoxide (DLCO, also known as transfer factor for carbon monoxide or TLCO), is a valuable test of lung function, specifically before undergoing an operation. This can be helpful in predicting patients at higher risk for postoperative complications following lung volume reduction surgery (LVRS) and overall postoperative pulmonary morbidity.
