Abstract
This article is concerned with the disorders of the auditory system and their clinical assessment. It shows the importance of obtaining the history and neurological examination before detailed psychophysical testing. The assessment of disorders of the central auditory system in clinic is a multidisciplinary exercise, involving a key collaboration between neurology and audiological medicine. Patients with a suspected disorder of the central auditory system require audiological evaluation of middle ear and cochlear function. Continuous EEG is sometimes needed to seek evidence of abnormal epileptic activity that might be associated with auditory processing disorders. The article considers disorders defined on the basis of positive auditory symptoms. It also discusses abnormal auditory cognition in common clinical disorders in which the auditory features do not define the disorder. It aims to define auditory deficits in terms of the level in the system at which they are caused.
