Error propagation for PCB, trans-nonachlor, and atrazine fluxes to Lake Michigan

Abstract
As part of the Lake Michigan Mass Balance effort, we have estimated atmospheric loads of PCB congeners, trans-Nonachlor, Atrazine, and nutrients. Presented here are estimates for loadings of particulate and precipitation deposition to Lake Michigan based on a 5 x 5 km gridded lake surface area and the associated propagated fractional errors (gas exchange flux errors are reported elsewhere). Due the large numbers of samples collected over time (eighteen months) and space (eight shoreline sites and seven cruises), the propagated error for whole lake loads are considerably reduced from previous efforts. For particulate deposition, the greatest uncertainty lies in a lack of particle-size distributions and poor understanding of particulate settling velocities. For precipitation loads, the error is due spatial variability in concentrations and analytical uncertainty. The strategy for propagating the uncertainties in each of the loading estimates will be described.
