Abstract
Ruling an authoritarian regime is a lucrative occupation. Political power and a monopoly on the means of coercion allow authoritarian rulers not only to extract rents and levy taxes but also to amass substantial personal fortunes, and those who overthrow an authoritarian regime can be tempted to repeat the sins of their predecessors. Without a dispersion of force and resources, or intervention from external actors, one leader or group may again prevail over the rest.
