Abstract
The current generation of surgical residents has significantly more options for academic pursuits than their predecessors. Health services, outcomes, translational, and education research have all grown in popularity, and it is increasingly clear that one can be successful in academic surgery by pursuing research in these and a number of other fields. Ultimately, the decision to pursue an advanced degree in education or an alternative field is a very personal one. While an advanced degree is not necessary to have a productive career focusing on surgical education, some may find it quite beneficial for a variety of reasons. The costs, benefits, opportunity costs, and personal and family factors will all play a role in this decision.
