Abstract
The current approach to the emergency treatment of patients with acute ischemic stroke is summarized by the term “brain attack.” Based on a number of advances in the diagnosis and treatment of ischemic stroke during the last 40 years, in particular, the success of emergency administration of intravenous thrombolysis, affected patients now may be treated successfully. Initiatives, such as the development of regional stroke programs, the use of the drip-and-ship strategy, the introduction of telemedicine, and stroke public and professional education activities, are being implemented to increase the number of persons who can be treated. Still, there is considerable room for improvement and additional research is needed to improve the overall management of patients with stroke including acute treatments, measures to prevent or control complications, therapies to prevent recurrent stroke, and interventions to augment and maximize recovery.
