Abstract
Contra Costa Water District operates the Contra Costa Canal, part of California's Central Valley Project. Hydrocomp, Inc. developed an interactive graphical model of the canal for use in both the management and operations offices of the water district. The model is designed to function in two modes: a continuously updated daily operations mode that assists operators in anticipating the outcome of their decisions, and a design mode that allows planners to investigate the effects of system modifications. The model represents key components of the canal system, including pumps, gates, turnouts, and siphons. The canal operator can check and modify the status of model components quickly and easily using graphical menus and displays. The design mode of the program allows modifications to the canal system configuration that is represented in the model. The geometry or slope of the canal can be changed, as well as the capacity of pumps or the dimensions of gates or other hydraulic structures. Model applications are discussed.
