Abstract
We contend (3, 24) that significant amounts of oxygen can be carried in blood inside of gas bubbles. Synthetic stabilized bubbles are in development for enhancement of ultrasonic contrast (4, 6, 9, 15, 19, 22, 23, 28, 29). These injectable bubbles are small enough to traverse capillary beds and persist much longer than simple bubbles of air (25, 26). If the stabilized bubbles are permeable, gaseous forms of O2, CO2, and N2 inside will exchange with the physically-dissolved counterparts in the blood and tissue when the bubble encounters various hydrostatic pressures and various gas partial pressures in the different parts of the circulatory system. Use of bubbles to carry O2 may be more efficient than other technologies; hyperbaric treatments depend on O2 carried in physical solution (5), and most blood substitutes require injection, into the circulation, of substantial amounts of foreign material, such as perfluorochemicals (1).
