Abstract
This chapter is about Iowa’s rural Catholic history, with a focus on Irish American Catholicism. Iowa Catholic farming families like the O-Tool-Hargrafens are featured and oral histories are a focus. Stories of late nineteenth century to early twentieth century White Catholic’s migration, settlement and homemaking are at the core of the chapter. Chapter one sets the tone for the rest of the book which focuses on more recent migrants who have similar stories of migration, settlement, and turning to their religious faith for strength. The author makes the assertion that in order to understand and to compare and contrast more recent migration experiences to the Midwest, it is important to historicize migration to this region.
