Abstract

In this chapter, I describe how to coach parents to follow their child’s lead during play—the core foundation of improving the child–parent relationship and the child’s social-emotional functioning. I describe why play is important to children’s development and the benefits of child-led play with a parent. I describe how to present the Child-Directed Interaction (CDI) skills to the parent during an engage and teach session and how to coach the parent to follow their child’s lead during play.
