Abstract
Hypotheses are crucial to all types of research, but too often the use of formalized hypothesis-testing is overlooked in music research. This chapter defines hypotheses, discusses how to properly test hypotheses, and argues for an increased focus on hypothesis testing in music corpus research while also highlighting how prevalent exploratory research was in early corpus studies. The chapter concludes with a meta-analysis of corpus studies over the past several decades. The results are consistent with a field dominated early by ad hoc exploratory work that focused on simple descriptive statistics of a tested sample, but also a field with a recent and growing trend of incorporating a priori hypothesis testing in corpus research.
