Abstract
The placement of dental implants in the posterior maxilla has often been problematic. Minimal bone volume for implant placement can be due to pneumatization of the maxillary sinus or resorption of the alveolar ridge from tooth loss or periodontal disease. Areas that have been edentulous for several years may present with only a few millimeters or less of bone. These patients require a maxillary sinus lift procedure in order to have adequate bone for implant placement. This chapter will discuss the diagnosis and treatment planning of the posterior edentulous maxilla as well as the use of sinus lift procedures and sinus grafting in implant dentistry.
