Abstract
This chapter is an inspection of institutional review boards (IRB), focused on the processes of applying for IRB approval, and specifically what critical scholars should consider when completing and submitting their applications. Simultaneously, it is intended to be a teaching tool—a means to explain why the requirements exist and how to reach them. The chapter reviews the roles and purposes of IRBs, the requirements of IRB applications, and the associated processes involved in a review. Connections to critical research and IRB processes are referred to throughout. Scholarly critiques of IRB are also detailed. Finally, a variety of practical tools are included to help scholars prepare IRB applications for successful review.
