Abstract
Previous chapters of this book have focused on the emergency department management of the critically ill patient with COVID-19. Unfortunately, the continued management of these patients may exceed the capacity or capability of the hospital to which the patient presented. Inter-facility transfer of a critically ill patient with COVID-19 may therefore be necessary. Multiple models for transfer of pediatric, ST-elevation myocardial infarction, and trauma patients have existed for decades in the United States, and the experience of decades of transfer procedures can be applied to COVID-19 care. The Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (EMTALA) also very clearly defines processes and procedures for transferring a patient between hospitals. Extrapolation from these existing models for inter-hospital transfer can serve as a framework for inter-hospital transfer of the critically ill patient with COVID-19.
