Abstract
On February 9, 2025, the Super Bowl LIX halftime show featured a performance by the celebrated rapper Kendrick Lamar. It marked the first time that a solo hip-hop artist had been chosen to headline the vaunted show. As has become customary, the Fox network’s broadcast of Super Bowl LIX was dripping with patriotic imagery. During the pregame performance of the national anthem, Fox cut to President Donald Trump saluting alongside his daughter Ivanka. It was the first time a sitting president had attended the Super Bowl. Fox’s shot of Trump saluting at attention also evoked the president’s enmity toward athletes
