Abstract
Friendship is often hailed as one of life's greatest goods, a solace in times of trouble and a joy that makes the good times better and more meaningful. Our friends know, love, and appreciate us for who we are. They are there for us when we need a helping hand or a sympathetic ear. They stick by us when the going gets tough, and defend us against the malice of others. Art, both high and low, is often built on stories of great friendships: Ellis and Andy in The Shawshank Redemption, Huck and Jim in The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, the titular pair in Romy and Michelle's High School Reunion, George and Lennie in Of Mice and Men, Elena and Lila in the four novels of The Neapolitan Quartet, and many others.
