Abstract
This chapter begins by juxtaposing China’s current economic slowdown with the United States’ experience at the end of the postwar boom, questioning whether Chinese workers might face challenges similar to those that affected American workers from the 1970s onward. We then explore various interpretations of ‘neoliberalism’ and examine evidence on whether China is moving toward—or already on—a neoliberal path akin to that of the United States. Following this, the chapter assesses the influence of Marxist theory on Chinese policy and politics, considering whether the Chinese Communist Party’s continued dominance could enable China to avoid the pitfalls of Western neoliberalism, such as extreme inequalities, weakened public services, and the influence of big money on politics. Finally, we ask whether China—or any country—is seriously committed to overcoming the commodification of human labour, land, and money, challenging the concept of value that underpins neoliberal economics.
