Abstract
Like many of his contemporaries in the nineteenth century, Mill did not restrict himself to one specizlized field, but made notable and enduring contributions to a number of subjects including political economy, history, psychology, sociology, and literary theory.

He also reached beyond the intellectual life. He was a committed social and political activist, who worked for many campaigns including women's suffrage; a politician (as member of the British parliament for Westminster); and a devoted botanist. Though Mill's reputation as a philosopher declined in the early decades of this century, he has in recent years been recognized as a moral and political thinker of the highest stature.
