Abstract
During the two decades following World War II, José Gómez Sicre, chief of the Visual Arts Section of the Pan American Union in Washington, D.C. organized several large‐scale exhibitions of Latin American art that were influential in shaping debates, movements, and institutions dedicated to modern art in various Latin American locations. Among them were
32 Artistas de las Américas
(1948–1949) and the Esso Salons of Young Artists (1964–1965). Although generally promoting continental perspectives on Latin American modern art and contributing to an emergent canon around this category, these exhibitions also experimented with forms of patronage and branding that continue to bear on the presentation of Latin American art in our contemporary era of neoliberal cultural configurations.
