Abstract
This chapter describes work by experimental economists on leadership and power in organizations. We first examine work on the positive effects of leadership in two widely studied environments, coordination games and public goods games. We then examine work on leader’s desire for control and how this can lead to poor outcomes, such as failing to yield control to better informed underlings. Finally, we explore the literature about cases where leaders do choose to give up control, delegating decision-making power to their subordinates. We particularly focus on cases where delegation is used to create moral wiggle room, allowing leaders to escape responsibility for immoral behavior.
