Abstract
This exercise engages with graffiti as a way to develop skills in archaeological recording and interpretation as well as a vehicle to consider power and inequality. It draws on the author's experiences with the 2020 Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests in her hometown of Iowa City, Iowa, and the graffiti that was created as part of those protests (Figure 14.1). By drawing on publicly accessible imagery, such as graffiti, important insights can be gained on the challenges of classification, the ethics of archaeological recording, the biographies of objects, the recursive nature of material culture, and phenomenological approaches to the material world.
