Abstract
Gastrostomy tubes are likely to be encountered in pediatric practice including the pediatric intensive care setting in patients with long-term feeding difficulty. Low-profile balloon gastrostomy tubes have a unique compact design and are often preferred due to their aesthetic appearance and ease of replacement. Complications, usually minor, can occur with use of these feeding tubes and include stoma/skin complications as well as tube dysfunction or dislodgement. Knowledge about the basic tube function and potential complications is essential for early recognition and prompt intervention to reduce patient morbidity and health-care costs.
