Abstract

Anophthalmic socket maintenance is critical for long-term, comfortable wear of a prosthesis. Ocular prostheses alter the conjunctiva, lids, and tear film which can result in increased mucous discharge and inflammation, meibomian gland dysfunction, and decreased tear volume. When a new or newly polished prosthesis is placed in an anophthalmic socket, the socket goes through a brief establishment phase, enters an equilibrium where it remains for approximately 6 months, and then breaks down with increased deposits, mucous, and inflammation. The aim of socket maintenance with lubrication, occasional cleaning of deposits with minimal handling of the prosthesis, and polishing of the prosthesis regularly is to maintain the socket in the equilibrium phase for as long as possible and to minimize socket breakdown with its side effects.
