Abstract
The house mouse is an ideal mammalian genetic model organism that combines high fertility, easy manipulation, near complete genomic information and the existence of mutations in almost all protein-coding genes to assess the complex interplay of the roughly 20000 genes thus far identified in the mammalian genome. The fast generation cycle of mice combined with an ever-increasing repertoire of techniques to manipulate genes provides a realistic perspective to reveal the developmental genetic networks required for cell and organ development as a paradigm for human development and disease.
