Abstract
My perspective on leading a research team has taken shape over many years and through a lot of reflection and refinement. At the most basic level, a research team is like any other team that forms as a group of complex humans around a shared goal or purpose. I have been engaged in teams of various scopes and shapes most of my life, and some of the most influential among those have been within higher education settings. They have all flowed through variations of group development stages, and some have been healthier and more productive than others. At this point in my career (25 years working in higher education and 10 years as a faculty member leading a research team), I have experienced much with teams and am sharing that experience in a systematic way in the hopes that others find it relatable, meaningful, and resourceful. This chapter is organized into three sections. First, I discuss the grounding concepts that make up my orientation to leading a research team-socialization, group development, a growth mindset, and an ethic of love. Then, I lay out the logistics of how I manage my team and discuss why each element is imperative. Finally, I offer readers a set of questions that may guide reflections about their team. Each of the three sections is peppered with stories and lessons I learned-often the hard way. Together, the ideas I present in this chapter construct a framework for a vibrant, efficient, and generative research team.
