Abstract

One consequence of the increased longevity of adults is that more and more couples are having the opportunity to enjoy marriage into later life. In previous years, it was common for one of the spouses to die in early adulthood or midlife, ending the marriage before the couple reached old age. Now, unless the marriage ends in divorce, most couples can anticipate being married for four or five decades.
