Abstract
Mentorship is critical for a successful career in ophthalmology. The relationship between mentee and mentor is fluid and mutually beneficial. A perfect mentor is connected, is up-to-date, and cares about their mentee. A perfect mentee is motivated, responsive, and appreciative. Often, the best mentors are just a bit ahead on their career course and nearly peers. Reverse mentoring is common where a more senior ophthalmologist is helped along by their junior especially in technical domains like the electronic medical record. As men currently hold more senior ophthalmology positions, it is critical that we define the parameters of the relationship for woman mentees so that both feel safe.
