Midden Ceramics and Their Sources in Kalinga

Abstract
If secondary refuse can be linked to its source area, then it may provide data on activities that took place within that area. Our work with extramural, open-air middens in a small community indicates that midden ceramics usually come from a restricted area around each midden. They represent vessels being handled or used in structures or extramural activity areas within the midden catchment area, and provide a representative sample of discarded vessels. The principles of refuse and ceramic deposition outlined here may allow the reconstruction of midden catchment areas within archaeological sites. This opens the door for studies of discarded
