Abstract
The trickle-down mathematical model was successfully calibrated with field data from Filson Creek watershed, Minnesota to predict whether present acid loadings are acidifying the lakes. Even though acidic loadings were moderate at Filson Creek (pH 4.8 of bulk precipitation and a sulfate load of 11 kg/ha/yr), a substantial pH depression was observed during snowmelt. Simulations showed that the average spring pH of Filson Creek would decrease from 6.2 to 5.0 if acidic deposition increased twofold. The greatest uncertainty in forecasting lake responses to increased acidic loadings was the kinetics of chemical weathering. Hydrologic flowrates and chemical weathering rates were the most sensitive parameters in their effect on surface water pH in the trickle-down model. The model can be used with annual acid depositional loadings for long term simulations.
