Abstract
Strong motion accelerograms can be efficiently modelled using time series analysis. Because of the nonstationarity of accelerograms, transformations must first be applied to stabilize the variance and frequency content. An ARMA model can then be fit to the stabilized series. By analyzing a large number of accelerograms in California, these ARMA and transform parameters have been related to physical variables. Thus it is possible to generate simulated ground motions in the area studied. The validity of the modelling process is measured by comparing the simulations and their frequency spectra to actual records.
