Abstract
This chapter provides an overview of the mood disorders of anxiety and depression and their interrelationship with trauma. In addition, authors recommend different approaches and interventions for working with gifted students who may experience anxiety and depression. Although all five unique overexcitabilities suggested by Dabrowski may play a role in a gifted student's experience with anxiety, intellectual and emotional overexcitabilities may be the most pertinent when considering anxiety and depression. In 2012 Maureen Neihart provided a series of suggestions for professionals to utilize when working with anxiety and depression that their gifted students experience. Although much of the chapter has focused upon diagnosable mental health issues, the ongoing stresses of daily living experienced by gifted and talented youth can be challenging as well. The mind-body connection has received significant attention in recent decades. Overall wellness and self-care can assist in mitigating the impact of mental health issues.
