Abstract
Multidimensional ultrasonic imaging of the heart can provide qualitative and quantitative information describing cardiac structure and function. Two-dimensional echo fails to supply an adequate image set for assessment of specific cardiac function. By developing appropriate scanning techniques to produce compound B-scans using a conventional echo sector scanner, more objective and complete analysis can be performed. This study presents results of invitro cardiac imaging, preliminary to application to invivo human hearts. A motor-driven mounted transducer was incrementally rotated over 180° to obtain 50 angles of view. Two excised normal dog hearts and two pig hearts with anatomical defects were scanned with a conventional echo sector scanner. After data collection and reconstruction, three-dimensional surface displays were generated for both the endocardial and epicardial surfaces. From oblique section displays, the structural defects in the abnormal in vitro hearts were clearly visible. With further development, these techniques promise greater facility in analysis and display of three-dimensional echo images and are adaptable for invivo cardiac imaging as well.
