Abstract
This chapter defines the phenomenon of mutual influence in group therapy, reviews the extant literature that has tested the mutual influence of group members in therapy groups, and extends this research to the group psychology literature. Specifically, it reviews group psychotherapy studies that apply Kashy and Kenny's (2000) actor–partner interdependence model (APIM) to test the mutual influence of group therapy members, identify limitations and future directions for studying mutual influence, and provide direction and practical examples for the application of mutual influence theory and research methods within the field of group psychology. Applying the APIM to group psychology may prove beneficial for researchers seeking to understand the complex ways in which members of groups influence one another. Small group researchers in social, organizational, and experimental psychology can benefit from the exploration of mutual influence with the APIM.
