Abstract
News literacy, and media literacy more broadly, has been a focal point of academic and popular fodder as a response to the spread of online mis-and disinformation and the trust crisis in contemporary news and journalism. News literacy, as we see it, describes the "knowledge of the personal and social processes by which news is produced, distributed, and consumed, ands kills that allow users some control over these processes". Starting from that definition, this chapter will review current research on interventions (e.g., courses, online modules, advertisements/campaigns, social media posts) aimed at audiences to examine the effectiveness of these efforts and industry attempts to support and improve news literacy as well as to improve journalistic practice (e.g., increased transparency and explanation of processes, collaborations between newsrooms and educators). By exploring audiences, education, and industries, this chapter will provide a broad overview of the news literacy landscape and its connection to digital journalism practice.
